How to be a Kind Detective of Your Girl’s Heart

Connected parents understand that their best approach to ongoing, open conversations with their girls is to adopt the persona of the “kind detective”—“kind” being the operative word here! Children have many layers of emotions, questions, and observations going on under the surface. Effective nurturing comes through peeling back the layers, like an onion, careful all the while not to damage the heart.

Effective kind detectives ask, “Here’s what I see. What am I missing?” and “How can I help?” These gentle approaches avoid the temptation to interrogate, which would likely push the girl away.

Crafting tough conversations offers an opportunity for a deep connection with your girl. Show her that you aren’t afraid to talk about difficult things in her life and that you love her enough to speak the truth in love.

Ephesians 4:15
