When Online Opinion Sharing can Bring Out the Worst

Have you ever consulted with your daughter on a new outfit or hairstyle? It can be an awkward conversation if her opinion is negative—but imagine if you never asked and she came right out and told you anyways! You’d be feeling uncomfortable, if not insulted.

Social media has practically erased our sense of politeness—the temptation to pipe our opinion into the comment section has cross-pollinated into everyday conversation. The rules of when, where, and how to share an opinion have disappeared.

Teach your girl the words of James 1:19. “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Stay true to this instruction, and reinstate the etiquette on when it’s appropriate to share your thoughts, or when it might be best to hold them close.

James 1:19, NIV
