Parenting Through Feelings of Entitlement

One of the most frustrating characteristics for any parent to see in their girls is a sense of entitlement. Whether it be a temper tantrum in the toy aisle or a fight over college tuition costs, entitlement is a plague affecting kids of all ages.

Here’s the thing: while it might seem like innocent or childish behavior now, the entitled kids of today become tomorrow’s unbearably needy adults. And no one wants to raise an insufferable human!

Instilling an expectation of service in your family’s daily life is one way to cut the cycle of entitlement. Ask everyone at the dinner table to share one thing he or she did to help someone that day. Teach your girl that our world owes her nothing, but rather as Christ-followers, we’re each called to give of ourselves to make our world a better place.
