There’s a triad mentioned often during the season of Lent—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. “But what does that last one mean?” your girl might be thinking.
Most Christians have a limited view of almsgiving. Can I guess what your definition might be? On the count of three, say it with me… 1…2…3… “giving money to the poor”. Did I read your mind? While giving money to the poor is technically correct, almsgiving is more than financial generosity. Alms are money, food, or other material goods given to people living in poverty—sacrifices that require our time, talent, or treasure.
This Lent, encourage your girl to find alternative ways of almsgiving that are pleasing to God. Seeking out acts of charity will open her eyes to the opportunities for generosity in everyday life.
