Encouraging Your Daughter to Have Healthy Body Image

Answer honestly: Have you ever uttered words of disappointment about your appearance in front of your daughter? Have you ever heard her echo back similar sentiments about her own body?

Did you know a reported 42% of girls in grades 1-3 want to lose weight? The scariest part of that statistic? That number was reported in 1991. Can you imagine how our social media culture would influence a similar study today?

Modeling healthy body image for your daughter is only the first step. So how do we teach healthy living and self-worth to our girls? As always, Scripture provides us with some heavenly wisdom: we are God’s handiwork.

Spend time together preparing a delicious healthy meal that will nourish your family. Then, start a conversation at your dinner table. Recognize the ways each of your bodies are different, and how they enable you to do what God intended. Celebrate what makes you unique. After all, we are each His workmanship, created with a purpose in mind!

  1. Especially during the pre-teen through young adult years, it is helpful to focus on getting and staying active, and no so much on healthy eating/drinking (although that is certainly important, too).
