Merriam Webster defines compassion as “a sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.” Compassion motivates people to go out of their way to ease the pains of another—it’s empathy in action. When it comes to instilling kindness and compassion in children, parents are their greatest teachers.
Self-compassion is another important lesson for our girls. Teaching and exemplifying for our daughters to extend grace to themselves in times of difficulty is a vital component of building emotional resiliency. When seeking an example of Godly compassion, we can look to the Scriptures.
Psalm 103:13-14 reads, “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.”
Psalm 103:13-14, NIV
