Eliminating The Childhood Luxury of Moral Hazard

If you were to get a call from your daughter while she’s at school, and she asked you to bring the homework she left on the kitchen table, what would you do?

Many of today’s youth experience the luxury of what’s called “Moral Hazard.” Economist Paul Krugman defines Moral Hazard as “Any situation in which one person decides on how much risk to take, while someone else bears the cost if things go badly.”

Consider allowing your girl to “bear the cost” of forgetting to take her homework to school. Later, ask her how it felt to endure the consequences. Let her bear the costs, and the Lord will mature her sense of self-responsibility.
