Should Your Be Your Daughter’s Parent or Her Friend?

So often the “perfect” parent/child relationship is portrayed as a friendship. While it’s admirable to desire a close connection with your daughter, it’s important to recognize the trap that is being her friend instead of her parent.

“Honor your father and your mother” was etched into Moses’ stone tablet for good reason. This commandment to honor our parents is at the core of what we know about God’s design for family. Mothers and fathers are entrusted with their kids, and their kids are expected to respect their authority.

Finding the line between being her parent and being her friend can be difficult for some. Remember: while she has many friends, your daughter only has one mom and one dad—so it’s crucial that those figures in her life stay true to their roles.
