Caring for Your Girl’s Mental Health When Suicide Rates Rise

In December 2021, the U.S. Surgeon General reported a 51% increase over the last 2 years of ER visits for adolescent girls who attempted to take their own lives.  

It’s tempting to hear of mental illness and self-harm and think “well not my girl”. But the truth is, everyone is at risk for these dangerous realities. Mental health is shaped by biological and environmental factors. So while you may not be able to control your family’s genetic makeup, you can provide a safe, loving, and Spirit-led environment for your girl. Prioritizing your family’s mental wellness is just as crucial as offering balanced meals or encouraging physical activity. 

Resources like Christian counseling, pastoral care, and clinical intervention may be just the healthy habits your daughter needs to regain or maintain her mental wellness.
